Charles was the son of Charles L. and Grace Gray Brown Sr. and was educated in Bridgton schools and the Civilian Conservation Corps. He was of Harrison and longtime resident of Yarmouth, Maine.
On April 16, 1948, he married Jean Stone in Norway. They had met while he was painting her parents' house.
Mr. Brown was employed as a shipping clerk for several plumbing supply companies. He was a member of the Casco Masonic Lodge 36 and a member of the Yarmouth Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, clamming, gardening and spending time with his family.
In 1940, he bought a furnished camp on Crystal Lake in Harrison for which he paid $750. He summered there with his family and eventually retired there. After his retirement, they wintered in New Smyrna Beach, FL. While raising his five children, he was still mindful of the needy and managed to provide gifts to children of the Portland waterfront.
He was predeceased by his wife of 52 years, Jean Brown, on May 31, 2001. He was also predeceased by a brother, Paul Brown and his wife Joy; two sisters, Charlotte Manning and her husband Ed Manning and Joyce Foster and her husband Dwight Foster; a special nephew, Ralph Brown and a daughter-in-law, Kathleen.
Surviving are one daughter, Charlene Ferguson and her husband Wayne of Yarmouth; four sons, Charles L. Brown III of Rangeley, W. Scott Brown, David Brown of Harrison and Peter Brown and his wife Jennifer of Harrison; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and one on the way; one cousin, Ronald Estes of Otisfield; two nieces, Donna and Suki and several other loving nieces and nephews.
