He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and U.S. Army serving in the Korean Conflict. He also worked for highway construction contractors for many years.
He attended high school in Amagon. He was a member of the American Legion and enjoyed fishing, gardening and spending time with his two pets, Taco and Tank.(dogs)

His family jokingly stated that he wasn't necessarily a fixer but would tinker with just about anything.
He is survived by his wife, Judith Messer Largent whom he married November 17, 1999; two step-sons, Peter Castelow and family of Memphis, Tenn. and Wayne Castelow and family of Richmond, Va.; one sister, Ann (Eugene) Newby of Drasco; eight nieces and nephews, several great nieces and nephews; special friends, Larry and Myrna Hearn and William and Marie Shirley and many friends.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Crabtrey of Alabama.
