CHARLES W. JOHNSON
Charles W. Johnson, 72, Villisca, merchant for many years, died of a stroke Friday afternoon, May 14, 1954 at his home on west Third Street.
Funeral services were held Monday, May 17, at 2 p.m. in the Methodist Church conducted by Rev Everett H. Staats. The singing was by Cecil Weaver, accompanied at the organ by Mrs. Frances Wheeler and in charge of the flowers were Mesdames Elmo Day, Walter Mulvania, Henry Tyler, and L. A. Parker.
Honorary pall bearers were Charles Shepherd, Ralph Northup, W. E. Carpenter, J. L. Wheeler, A. E. Mizel, and D. M. Vaught and active bearers were John L. Magnuson, Ted McCoy, Cecil Schrader, Lee Means, Elma Day, and Waldo Penton. Interment was in the Villisca Cemetery.
Villisca business houses were closed during the funeral from 1:30 to 3 p.m.
Charles W. Johnson, son of W. H. and Jennis Johnson, was born January 27, 1882 in Monroe County, Iowa. He attended Moravia High School and at an early age came to Nodaway, Iowa, where he learned the cheese making business from his mother-in-law, the late Frank east lack. He worked in factories for him at Nodaway, Sharpsburg, and at a factory seven miles southeast of Villisca, known as Riverside. In 1904, Charles and a brother Arthur build and operated a factory in Denton, Missouri.
September 13, 1905 he united in marriage to Augusta Lindberg and to this lion one daughter was, Mrs. Ruby Runyan.
He continued to operate the factory in Missouri for three years after which he returned to Villisca, where he brought the Riverside factory with he operated until 1919. In November of that year he moved to his late residence on west Third Street in Villisca. In November 1925 he purchased the grocery store which he continued to operate until his death.
He leaves his wife, daughter, and one granddaughter, JoAnn Runyan; one brother M. H. Johnson, Oravia, Iowa; three sisters, Mrs. Nora Eastlack, Omaha, Nebraska, Mrs. Carolyn Wolfe, Waterloo, Iowa and Mrs. Effie Gollaher, Moravia, Iowa. He was preceded death by his parents, two brothers, Arthur and Neal and one sister, Mrs. Gertrude Tissue.
