In Auburn's equivalent to the story of "Greyfriars' Bobby", Dr. Kennedy's dog, Sport, followed his master's hearse to Fort Hill Cemetery and refused to leave after his burial. Sport then remained by his late owner's grave until he was in danger of starvation. Taking pity on the devoted animal, the cemetery staff subsequently cared for him until his own death some time later. Afterwards a portrait statue of Sport bearing the inscription "Faithful Friend" was commissioned and placed on the site where he had waited for the master who would never return.
Born on Halloween 1837 to Sidney R. and Julia A. Kennedy, Arthur S. Kennedy, MD, was a resident of Auburn who had retired from his practice as an Eye, Ear & Nose specialist before his untimely death in a hunting accident during the summer of 1897. Predeceased by his parents, who were interred in Fort Hill some 30 years earlier, the 59-year-old physician evidently enjoyed an exceptional bond with Sport, who seems to have been his principal mourner. The doctor's gravesite is located on the northern side of the cemetery's Mt. Vernon section, about 15 feet in from the road, near the Sanford monuments.
