Miss Newell, member of a prominent family, had a distinguished career in social service work and as a teacher of the social sciences.
For many years Miss Newell held responsible positions with the children's division of the Georgia State Welfare Department, and at the time of her retirement it was said that she probably had traveled "the equivalent of 10 times around the world" in follow-up and other work cocerned with adoption procedures she handled in her post.
Miss Newell once taught social science at the University of Peking in China and in Atlanta, St. Louis, Chicago, and New York.
She was the grandaughter of Georgia Gov. Alfred Holt Colquitt who was later a U.S. Senator from Georgia. Her grandfather, Issac Newell came to Milledgeville from Hartford, Conn., and still remembered by older residents is "Newell Hall," which he set up as a center of entertainment, social
life and culture.
Miss Newell is survived by two sisters, Mrs. William H. Schultz of New York and Baltimore, and Mrs. William Koepp of Milledgeville; four nieces, Mrs. Wright Bryan of Clemson, S.C., Mrs. Robert Whatley of Forest Hills, N.Y., Mrs.Edward Minor of Baltimore and Mrs. Alexander Moss of New York City.
