Gertrude was teaching in Curtis when she met and started dating her future husband, Gus Spletzer. She then taught in Sault Saint Marie and quit to marry Gus in Marquette at St. Peter's on 25 February 1941. Wittnesses were the brides siblings, Maurice and Helene Clancey. Gus and Gertrude then moved to Detroit where Gus had gotten a job. They lived there until after their first child, a son, was born. Then they built a house in Dearborn Township(later called Dearborn Heights). They had a second child, a daughter. In 1954, Gertrude started teaching again and taught until her retirement in 1977. In total, she taught 28 1/2 years. She and Gus lived in Dearborn Heights for the remainder of their lives.
Gertrude loved going to school and loved teaching. She enjoyed gardening, reading, and sewing. She and Gus really loved being with family, including their five grandchildren.
