Gertrude was the sixth child and second daughter born to Patrick Joseph Clancey (1872-1949) and Ellen Mary Ryan (1885-1979). She was baptized on 8 December 1912 at St. Gregory Church in Newberry. When she was 2 1/2, the family moved to Raber on the St. Mary's River where her Dad worked in a lumber mill. After the mill burned in 1918, Gertrude's Dad got a job as a mill sawyer in Big Bay and the family moved there, where they lived until 1929, when they moved to Marquette. Gertrude graduated from Bishop Baraga High School in 1930. She then attended Northern State Teachers College (later named Northern Michigan University). At age 19 1/2, with a 5-year limited teaching certificate, she started teaching and continued to go college in the summers until she graduated from Northern in 1940.

Gertrude was teaching in Curtis when she met and started dating her future husband, Gus Spletzer. She then taught in Sault Saint Marie and quit to marry Gus in Marquette at St. Peter's on 25 February 1941. Wittnesses were the brides siblings, Maurice and Helene Clancey. Gus and Gertrude then moved to Detroit where Gus had gotten a job. They lived there until after their first child, a son, was born. Then they built a house in Dearborn Township(later called Dearborn Heights). They had a second child, a daughter. In 1954, Gertrude started teaching again and taught until her retirement in 1977. In total, she taught 28 1/2 years. She and Gus lived in Dearborn Heights for the remainder of their lives.

Gertrude loved going to school and loved teaching. She enjoyed gardening, reading, and sewing. She and Gus really loved being with family, including their five grandchildren.
