Sister Mary Ann Gahan, RSCJ, the daughter of Michael Gahan (McGahan) and Elizabeth Parker.

Mary Ann was the second postulant who presented herself to the newly founded convent at Rose Bay, Sydney, the Sacred Heart Sisters. She was clothed with the habit on the 6th April 1883 and pronounced her first vows on 1st May 1885.

The Sacred Heart Sisters arrived in Sydney in 1882 they were given 6 weeks hospitality at the convent of the Good Samaritan in Pitt Street, Sydney. It was here that Mary Ann met the sisters.

In 1888 a foundation was made in Melbourne and Mary Ann was chosen to be one of the founding sisters. She was is charge of the laundry and community linen room. After a few years in Melbourne, her lungs became affected and she was admitted to the grace of final profession in March 1893. In spite of her growing weakness Mary Ann continued to work in the linen room. She died on 24th May 1893 and she was the first of the Sacred Heart Sisters to die in Melbourne. Her remains rest in the section belonging to the Society of the Sacred Heart in Kew Cemetery.
