Funeral services for Vernon L. Zimmerman, 82, of Appleton, WI, will be held Saturday, February 16, 1991, at First Congregational United Church of Christ in Appleton, with the Rev. Jane Terry officiating.

He died on Monday, February 11, 1991 following an extended illness. He was born on January 6, 1909 in Racine, MN and graduated from North Central College, Naperville, IL with a bachelors of science degree.

Following his graduation, he taught science and was a football coach in Plymouth, WI where he met and married Ruth W. Beisser.

He also taught in Marshfield and then moved to Appleton in 1943 where he graduated from Lawrence University with a masters of arts degree. He taught biology and was a football coach at McKinley Junior High and Appleton High School for 15 years.

He then was the district manager for World Book Encyclopedia. He was an active member of St. John United Church of Christ and First Congregational United Church of Christ. He was instrumental in the construction of Appleton Medical Center (Appleton Memorial Hospital) and was a trustee of Lakeland College, Sheboygan.

Survivors are two daughters and sons-in-law, Lois and Dr. Marshall Lind of Juneau, AK and Joanne and Dr. Thomas Lake of Springfield, IL; two sons, John and Joann Zimmerman of Appleton and James and Lizbeth Zimmerman of Paris, France; a sister, Ruth Zimmerman of Rochester, MN; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandsons.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth W. (Beisser) Zimmerman on August 26, 1988; his parents, John and Zora (Haas) Zimmerman and two brothers, Roland and Lloyd Zimmerman.

Entombment will be in the Singing Tower Mausoleum, Highland Memorial Park.
