MARY JANE BISHOP

Henderson, TN: Mary Jane Bishop, age 96 passed away Wednesday morning September 2, 2015 at Southern Oaks Assisted Living, where she had resided for one month.

She was born January 25, 1919 in McNairy County and reared in Chester County near Enville, the only daughter and first born child of the late Elmer and Minnie Moore Bishop. She graduated from Chester County High School in 1938, received her teacher’s certificate from Freed Hardeman College, her BS Degree from Union University, and her Masters Plus from Memphis State University.

Miss Mary Jane Bishop taught school for thirty-eight years before retiring in 1981.
She was active in the First United Methodist Church in Henderson and in the United Methodist Women, serving in all offices.

She was a member of the Beta Eta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, where she had served as president and served as Director of area IX workshop.

She was a member of the Kappa Delta PI, recognized in Honors Assembly at Memphis State for outstanding academic achievement and professional leadership in the field of education. She was a past president and past treasurer of the Chester County Teachers’ Association. She was a past president of Chester County Council of Parent Teacher Association, and was a life member of the Tennessee Congress of Parents and Teachers. She received the Distinguished Classroom Teacher Award from the Tennessee Education Association in 1977. She was a member of the Henderson Business and Professional Women’s Club, having served as president, treasurer, and public relations chairman. She had served as corresponding secretary for the Tennessee Federation of BPW Clubs. She was Henderson’s Woman of Achievement in 1970. She was a member of the Henderson Chapter # 120 Order of the Eastern Star.

She served on the Chester County Library Board of Trustees as chairman, treasurer, and on the Shiloh Regional Library Board as chairman.

She was a member of the Chester County retired Teachers’ Association. There she served as Legislative chairman and as secretary.

Miss Bishop is survived by two nephews, Robert “Bob” Bishop of Florida and Terry Bishop of Illinois and also two great nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Thomas Bishop and James Elmer Bishop and a nephew, Keith Bishop.

Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Friday September 4, 2015 at Shackelford Funeral Directors – Casey Chapel with Dr. Elzie Danley and Dr. Roger Penn officiating and burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Casey Chapel beginning at 12:00 Noon Friday.
