From the myths of the south seas no one can extract that element which drew George Franklin from New York, past Chicago and Los Angeles, to Hilde Szubinski—or indeed William Crichton from Glasgow to her great-grandmother Uputaua or Erich Szubinski from Berlin to her mother Henrietta—but draw them it did, and the result for Hilde and George was a life shared wandering and experiencing the environs of the Pacific.

Born within a year of each other—it is impossible to narrate any significant incident of either George’s or Hilde’s post-adolescent life without including the other— they died within a half year of each other in 2007. Their intermingled ashes are scattered in Honolulu and San Diego, two significant foci of their lives together—although they could have as appropriately been scattered in Yokohama, Okinawa, Taipei, Hong Kong, Auckland, Moorea, or Apia, had opportunity been afforded. May they forever be a part of the ocean that drew them together.
