John left school at age 12 to support his mother, invalid father, & siblings during Reconstruction and was an eager, self-taught student thereafter. Very good looking & said to have been a bit of a rake, rather wild in his youth. A well read man and a devout Christian as an adult, his chief occupation was as a civilian worker & notary in the Memphis office of the Army Corps of Engineers. He & his family lived for some years at 1905 Richmond St., Memphis, Tennessee, a house w/ a backyard cow pasture on what was then a cul de sac at edge of town. A later residence was at 1637 York Ave., Memphis, Shelby Co., TN. In latter years he was heavy set & had heart problems. Burial was in Memphis and family lore had assumed Elmwood but it was at Forest Hill-Midtown where wife Roberta was buried. (9/8/15 Thank you Neil Loftiss.)

Roberta (nee' Roberta Alice Thompson) and John had 4 children:
1. James Thompson "Doc" PROTHRO, DDS b: 16 JUL 1893 in Memphis, Shelby Co., Tennessee (m. Cates) # 46790744
2. Mary Elizabeth Prothro b: 29 AUG 1895 in Memphis, Shelby Co., Tenn (m. Carey) # 29863254
3. Roberta Thompson Prothro b: 11 AUG 1896 in Memphis, Shelby Co., Tennessee (m. Wellford) # 71252439
4. Maria Evelyn Prothro b: 18 JUN 1903 in Memphis, Shelby Co., Tennessee (m. Liddon, m. Brown) # 117259087
