ALAN SAFFORD CHITTENDEN JERICHO — Alan Safford Chittenden, 43, died Wednesday, June 25, 2003. He was born in Burlington on June 24, 1960, the son of James and Helen (Hollar) Chittenden. He graduated from Bellows Free Academy in St. Albans, Class of 1978, and the University of Vermont, where he earned his B.S. He married his high school sweetheart, Michelle Laroche, on June 6, 1987, at St. Anne's Shrine in Isle La Motte. Alan worked at IBM for 21 years as a programmer analyst. He lived his life without complaint, determined to focus on his gifts rather than adversities. We will remember the challenge of matching his mathematician's mind for games, his patience and gentle manner, his generosity toward those in need, and his affection for cats of all temperaments. We will miss his enthusiasm for the New York Giants and his unshakable faith in the Red Sox. There was about him something valiant. He will always be our hero. He is survived by his devoted family: his wife of 16 years, Michelle Chittenden, and their two children, Jake and Maya, of Jericho; his parents, James Jr. and Helen (Hollar) Chittenden of Burlington; his paternal grandmother, Shirley Chittenden of Richmond; his brother, Kent Chittenden of Vergennes; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial Mass will be celebrated Monday, June 30, at 10 a.m. in St. Pius X Church, Route 15, Essex Center. A reception in the parish hall will follow the service with burial in Jericho Center Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Vermont Children's Aid Society, 79 Weaver St., Winooski, Vt. 05404, or VNA Home Care, 1110 Prim Road, Colchester, Vt. 05446. Corbin and Palmer Funeral Home, Essex Junction, is in charge of arrangements. Condolences may be sent to the family online at www.corbinandpalmerfuneralhome.com.
