James Ernest Whitten Sr., 90, died May 24, 2010, at his residence. Services are Friday at 2 p.m. at Ethelsville Baptist Church with the Rev. Mel Howton officiating. Body will lie in state 30 minutes before service time. Burial will follow in Ethelsville Community Cemetery. Visitation is today from 6-8 p.m. at Skelton Funeral Home of Reform. Mr. Whitten was born March 29, 1920, in Ethelsville to the late Clarence and Alice Brownlee Whitten. He was a member of Ethelsville Baptist Church. He was a retired employee of Johnston Furniture Co. in Columbus and was a U.S. Army veteran. He was a lifelong resident of Pickens County. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his son, James Edward Whitten; brothers, Carter, Calvin, Troy and Dewitt; sisters, Louise Bradshaw and Corrine Jaynes. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Henderson Whitten, of Ethelsville; son, Earnest Whitten, of Millport, Ala.; sisters, Mary Powell and Blanche Taylor; brothers, Shaden, Junior and Virgil Whitten; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Bertis and Rogar Schultz, Chuck Bradshaw, Mike, Drew, Patton, Garry and Steve Whitten and Mike Hantock.
