Alice “Jean and Grandma Jean,” as she was known to most, was born on December 17, 1921, in Lake Andrew Township, the daughter of Horace and Alma (Larson) Reese, grew up on a farm near County Road #5, (Little Crow Trail in its day) by Lake Florida Sloughs. She attended District #27 and graduated from Willmar High School in 1939.
In 1939, Jean was united in marriage to Maynard Christianson in Willmar and to this union seven children were born: Doreen, John, Alyce, Ron, Craig, Kevin and Todd. They lived in Willmar and Jean worked as a waitress for over 20 years and also at Bethesda Homes. Jean enjoyed being involved with her kids and was a Cub Scout Den Mother for Pack #224, holding the meetings in the basement of their home.
In 1977, Jean was united in marriage to Fred C. Asche and following their marriage they made their home on Green Lake where Jean continued to live. She and Fred enjoyed their winters in Texas and they also did crafts together.
She was baptized on April 4, 1922 and confirmed on May 31, 1936, both at Vikor on Solomon Lake. While living in Willmar, Jean was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church and had recently attended and joined Peace Lutheran Church in New London. She enjoyed very much her Bible study group and reading the Bible, quilting, and volunteering in the kitchen during funerals.
Her flower gardens were always immaculate as well as her vegetable garden. The produce was shared with many, as she canned most of it. Jean had a gift of baking delicious caramel rolls, fresh breads, and doughnuts and in her usual unselfish manor, she would share her baked goods with family and friends, especially those who were in nursing homes. Besides her quilting, Grandma Jean was a gifted sewer and embroiderer, making teddy bears, dolls, and many sets of dish towels for her family and friends. She enjoyed feeding and watching the birds around her home. Above all else, Grandma Jean was most happy when her family was together. She knew how to bring them together – her family was her life. Whether it was Thanksgiving or Christmas, or just getting together at the lake to spend time with the grandkids and great grandkids. Jean enjoyed life to its fullest, thankful for every day she was given.
Surviving are her children: Doreen (and John) Magnuson of Willmar; Alyce (and Jerry) Miley of Avon; Ron (and Jeanine) Christianson of Willmar; Kevin Christianson of Willmar; Todd (and Lisa) Christianson of Willmar; daughter-in-law, Sandy Christianson of St. Cloud; 18 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Fred; sons: Craig and John; grandson, Jay Magnuson; brothers: Merton and Harlan Reese; sisters: Eunice Bengtson, Harriet Pagel and Joyce Himanga; and her first husband, Maynard Christianson.
