Abigail's father, David Deming, was a promenient merchant in Colchester for many years. He represented Colchester in the General Assemblies of 1811, 1813-15, 1817 and 1823. He was a delegate to the convention held at Hartford in Aug 1818 to form the State Constitution. He was a major of the cavalry and 1819-1820 brigadier-general of the artillery brigade which consisted of two regiments of light and three of horse artillery.

Henry Deming was known in Connecticut as an orator and public debater in both branches of the Legislature. He graduated from Yale in 1836, Harvard Law in 1839. He opened an office in New York City and devoted himself to literature. Henry moved to Hartford in 1847 and opened a law office. Henry actively entered politics and 1849-50 and 1859-60 was a member of the House of Representatives. In 1851 he was elected to the State Senate. Mayor of Hartford 1854-1858 and again 1860-1862.
