Rites conducted at Hobart today for Plane Pilot
Funeral services were held at Hobart this afternoon for Paul Powell, Mangum aviator, who was piloting the ill-fated plane which crashed near Childress, Texas,Tuesday morning instantly killing three persons.
Rev. Charles L Brooks, pastor of the First Methodist Church here, conducted the final rites for Powell
from the First Methodist Church of Hobart at 2:30 this afternoon. Burial was made at Hobart under the
direction of the Greer Funeral Home.
Active pallbearers for the funeral were Barney Baumgardner, Harry Caffey, Wendy Martin, Pat Wims,
Jack Herndon and Paul Brown of Altus. A large crowd from here and a number of aviators from over the state attended the service.
Hundreds of telegrams, floral offerings, and letters of condolence from all parts of the United States were received at the hospital today in respect to the pilot.
Divergent accounts of the fatal accident by several eye-witnesses which occurred on the Smith ranch 16 miles north of Childress hindered investigators who sought to determine the cause of the "death spin".
The plane had been flown more than 200,000 miles and had carried hundreds of patients to and from hospital here without a serious mishap.
Powell was considered an excellent pilot. The youthful aviator became interested in aviation at Des Moines, Iowa, and came to Mangum five years ago as a parachute jumper.
He studied aviation under Ray Shifflett and obtained his transport licence here several years ago.
Powell was born at Sayre on April 6, 1906, the son of Mr. and Mrs. W.J. Powell, His family moved to Mountain Veiw a few years later where he spent the early part of his life.
Surviving the victim are his parents who resided at Mountain Veiw and six brothers, Richard Powell,Lawrence Powell, and Charles Powell all of Mountain Veiw; Roy Powell of Canute, Cecil Powell of Duncan, and Emmett Powell of California.
