Samuel J. Andrews, a graduate of Yale College, came from New Haven, CT and in 1812 bought a tract of land on the river, jointly with his brother-in-law, Moses Atwater of Canandaigua. This adjoined the farm of Enos Stone and included the Upper Falls. In 1815 he brought his family, and bought a lot at what is now the comer of Main and St Paul Sts, where he built the first stone house in Rochester. Before the end of 1816 he had started to build mills on his land at the Falls. He d in 1832 aged 64, and under the direction of his son, Samuel G., the “Andrews Tract” has been surveyed and sold out in village and city lots. His other children were James S., Julius T., Mrs William Sherman, all of Rochester, and the wife of Judge Joseph R. Swan of Columbus, Ohio.
