Carl advanced his education with a Master of Education degree from Texas A&M in 1947, and a Doctorate degree from Pennsylvania State University in 1951. He spent 36 years on the Texas A&M staff in the department of health and physical education. He progressed from instructor in 1943 to professor and head of the department in 1967, a position he maintained until his retirement as Professor Emeritus in 1979.

Dr. Landiss was proud to have presided over a growing and expanding department of health and physical education, during the time that enrollment at Texas A&M grew from 11, 000 to 31, 000. During his tenure, he presided over the expansion of G. Rollie White Coliseum, including facilities for women student and faculty as well as the East Kyle Field expansion. In addition to numerous awards and recognitions, Dr. Landiss served as President of the Texas Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation and was awarded the Faculty Distinguished Achievement Award in Teaching by Texas A&M University.

Dr. Landiss served his country during World War II in active duty, as LTjg in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946. He was a mason, and was active in the affairs of the community, serving as College Station City Councilman, and Planning and Zoning Commission member. Carl was a Southwest Conference football official from 1948 to 1972. He was fortunate to be the referee in numerous Cotton Bowl games, as well as in the "Big Shootout" National Championship game between Texas and Arkansas in 1969. He had an appreciation for the great outdoors, was a sportsman and recreational rancher. Carl was a dedicated, loyal and supportive member of the A&M Church of Christ in College Station for over 60 years. He loved his wife, Georgia Belle, and their two children, Carolyn and Bill.
