James William Ackerman, affectionately known by many as "Jim", age 80, of North Charleston, entered into rest Sunday morning, September 6, 2015, at the Ralph H. Johnson Veteran's Administration Hospital in Charleston. He was the loving husband of forty-seven years to the late Mrs. Carol Jean Nelson Ackerman.
He was born to the late Charles Malachi and Ruby Mae on August 16, 1935 in Cottageville.
He served our country faithfully in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict.
He was the founding owner of Palmetto Chimney Sweeps in Charleston and was a longtime brick mason who, throughout the Lowcountry, was known by many as a craftsman at his trade. He was of the United Methodist faith and had attended Riverbluff Baptist Church.
Surviving are a daughter, two sons, a sister, and his beloved companion "Little Missy". There are four grandchildren, three great grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Sherri Lynn Ackerman.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 pm Wednesday afternoon, September 9, 2015, from The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Chapel, Walterboro. The Reverend William Hoff officiating. Interment will follow in Hughes Cemetery, Wesley Chapel Road, Cottageville.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial contributions be directed in his memory to the following: Hospice of Charleston, 4975 Lacross Rd, Suite 200, Charleston, SC 29406; or to, Ralph H. Johnson Veteran Administration Hospital, 109 Bee Street, Charleston, SC 29401.
