Gary R. Carpenter, 62, of Mannington, passed away Saturday, September 5, 2015 at his residence. He was born November 26, 1952 in Fairmont, a son of the late Ward Burl and Maguerite Catherine Tennant Carpenter.

Gary was employed at the Fairmont-Morgantown Housing Authority since 2002 and was a veteran of the United States Air Force. He was a 14 year member of the Mannington Volunteer Fire Department and a former member of the Marion County Rescue Squad.

Gary was active in the community, volunteering his time with Mannington Little League and attending North Marion Football games. He was an avid supporter of the North Marion Huskies Football teams, rarely missing a game.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley Ann Parrish Carpenter, whom he married June 12, 1976; 3 children: Matthew (Victoria) Carpenter, Lindsay Carpenter (boyfriend: Dustin Talkington), and Collin Carpenter, all of Mannington; 4 grandchildren: Isabella and Brooklynn Talkington, Lacie Simmons and Richard Carpenter; 6 siblings: Ward Carpenter, New Mexico, Charles Carpenter, Metz, Ruth Fortney, Mannington, Leila Splant, Chicago, IL, Russell Carpenter, Bentleyville, PA, and Ronald Carpenter, Mannington, who was always there for Gary when needed; several nieces and nephews, and a special friend who was like a brother, John Haught.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by 8 siblings: Jimmy, Robert, Frank, Dorothy Mae, Gene, Donald, Wayne Carpenter, and Louise Powell.

Friends may call at the Hutson Funeral Home, 500 E. Main St., Mannington, on Monday from 2-4 & 6-9 p.m. where funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor/Fire Department Chaplain Bill Coon and Shelly Dye officiating. Interment will be in the Harmony Cemetery at Burton.
