Santo L. Piazza, 78, a lifelong Staten Islander and retired bank vice president, died August 14 in San Giovani di Dio Hospital, Sardinia, Italy.

Born in Mariners Harbor, he graduated from St. Peter's Boys High School, New Brighton, and earned his bachelor's degree in science and business from Wagner College, Grymes Hill.

He served in the U.S. Army's 43rd Infantry Division for two years during the Korean war, and attained the rank of sergeant.

Mr. Piazza moved to Oakwood in 1957.

He worked at the former Chemical Bank in Manhattan for 35 years, retiring as a vice president in 1988. He later worked part-time in retail at Staples in New Springville, and also was an election inspector at PS 23 in Richmond.

Mr. Piazza was a longtime member of Oakwood Heights Community Church, where he served on the board of trustees.

He also was a member of the AARP, the American Legion, and the Wagner College alumni association.

Mr. Piazza loved to travel across the United States. He had a home in Vero Beach, Fla., and enjoyed visiting Disney World in Orlando, Fla. His favorite destinations included Washington D.C., and the Pocono Mountains in Pennsylvania.

He also delighted in spending time with his wife, children, and grandchildren.

"He was a wonderful person," said his son, Mark. "He touched everyone he met. He was truly special."

In addition to his son, Mark, Mr. Piazza is survived by his wife of 53 years, the former Marilyn Martin; his two daughters, Wendy Pierce and Cindy Capps; a brother, Joseph Piazza; a sister, Bridget Menuey, and six grandchildren.

The funeral service will be Thursday at 10 a.m. in Oakwood Heights Community Church. Burial will follow in Ocean View Cemetery, Oakwood. Colonial Funeral Home, New Dorp, is handling the arrangements.
