Vetah Chandler, 98, of Norman, formerly of Shawnee, died Saturday, Aug. 5 in Norman. Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Havenbrook Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Cal Brannon officiating. Interment will be at the Sparkman-Hillcrest Cemetery in Dallas, Texas.
The sixth child of Joseph and Lutaha (Girdner) Gann, Vetah was born July 17, 1908. in the family dugout on a claim near Boise City in Cimarron County.
At age 2, she traveled with her family in a covered wagon to Hazeldale, a community just north of Shawnee. She attended elementary school in Glasser, Texas, and then returned to Shawnee where she graduated from high school.?
Her special interests were music, sewing, cooking, homemaking and helping her nine brothers and sisters. In high school she began a career in ladies ready-to-wear and also modeled for the Mammoth department store.
On Dec. 17, 1933, she married Earl Chandler and moved to Wichita, Kan., where she worked as a homemaker, gardened and was known as a gracious and accomplished hostess. They lived in Mount Pleasant, Michigan for a time and traveled the eastern states as she and her husband spent much time in Bradford, Pennsylvania. While accompanying her husband on business trips, she continuously used her Singer sewing machine to create clothing and household items for family and friends.
In the early 1940s, the couple moved to Dallas. There she was active in the Christian Church, raised a number of specialty plants and entertained for family, friends and business associates. She used her sewing skills and incredible imagination to create unique handmade toys, dolls and accessories for bazaars and for private sale.
She returned to a career in sales as a sales associate for ladies courtier and furs for Neiman Marcus.?She continued that work after her husband's death in 1967.
In 1980, she returned to Shawnee and established a home with her sister Mildred Bickell. In 2003, she moved to Rambling Oaks Assisted Living Center in Norman and in March of this year moved to Grace Living Center.
Family said Mrs. Chandler was well known for her positive outlook on life, her enthusiasm for the lives of her family and friends and for the beautiful smile that she continued to share throughout her life, particularly during her recent illness.
She was known as the "violet lady" for the many African violets that she grew and shared with friends and family. She was an accomplished cook, was always interested in world events and, at age 92, learned to use a computer and the Internet.
Mrs. Chandler was a lifelong member of First Christian Church in Shawnee. She was also a member of Eastern Star and various women's circles.
Mrs. Chandler is preceded in death by her husband, her parents and her nine brothers and sisters: Gladys Wisegarver, Ottis F. Gann, Eulalee Crownover, Lelah Gann, Mildred Pock Bickell, W. B. Gann, R. C. Gann, Christine Milstead and Joe Gann.
She is survived by her nieces Deborah Gann of Wichita, Jan Mayne of Kansas City, Chris Johnson of Denver and nephew Glen Wisegarver of Junction City, Oregon. Other survivors include sister-in-law Jody Gann of Oklahoma City and niece-in laws Carol Gann of Oklahoma City and Kathy Gann McCoy of Wichita.
Local survivors include great niece Glenna Ott, and her husband Sam, great-great nephew Derrick Ott and his wife Jenna. She is survived by a host of great and great-great nieces and nephews in Wichita, Kansas City, San Antonio, Denver, South Carolina, Arizona, California, Oregon and Washington.
The family expressed sincere gratitude to Dr. Thomas Merrill and nurse Pam Levy and to the staffs at Grace Living Center and Rambling Oaks Assisted Living Center.
