A Pioneer Citizen of Birmingham Has Passed Away

Birmingham, Nov 3 (Special) - W W McGlathery, a pioneer citizens of Birmingham, died Tuesday afternoon, aged 71 years. His death was sudden, an attack coming on Monday evening, and resulting in hemorrhages of the brain Tuesday.

Death occurred at the family residence, No 1750 Huntsville Avenue. A widow and four children survive, the children being Mark P, Howard N, and Hugh W, and one daughter, Mrs George B Brittain. The deceased was captain of Company C of the 31st Alabama Regiment in the Confederate Army and fought bravely through that memorable struggle.

The arrangements for the funeral are now being made. The deceased came here 25 years ago from Gadsden AL. He leaves a brother who lives at El Paso, Texas. The deceased was an ardent member of the Methodist Church and also of the Masons.

Oldest child of Giles Burdette & Louisa (Rogers) McGlathery. His father was the son of Samuel & Martha (Darling) McGlathery who were born in Laurens Co SC and died in TN. Giles Burdette McGlathery was born 7 Jan 1813 in TN & died 21 May 1860 in Calhoun Co AL. Louise Rogers McGlathery was born 10 Oct 1818 in TN and died on 27 Aug 1874. Their burial locations are unknown at this time.

William Wallace McGlathery married Anna Vincent Slaton. They were the parents of Joseph M McGlathery, William Marcus Pettus McGlathery, Howard N McGlathery, Hugh Watson McGlathery, and Leta L McGlathery Brittain.

His siblings were Samuel McGlathery (1839), Cynthia McGlathery (1841), Marcus Walker McGlathery (1843), James M McGlathery (1845), Mary McGlathery (1847), Sarah McGlathery (1849), Louisa Josephine McGlathery (1853), Emma McGlathery (1855), and Giles Burdette McGlathery (1860).

His aunts and uncles were Thomas McGlathery, David McGlathery, Darling H McGlathery, Elizabeth McGlathery Lynch, Samuel Earl McGlathery, and Rev James A McGlathery.
