James V. Avery, Jr. of Dover, PA, York County died Sunday September 6, 2015 in his residence.

Born in Harrisburg on January 11, 1949, he was the son of the late James V., Sr. and Gahil Bartel Avery. He was retired from the Federal Government as a claims processor and trainer at several VA Medical Centers and presently loved his part time job as a story teller and ghost hunter at the Farnsworth House in Gettysburg.

Jim was a graduate of John Harris High School, earned his associates degree from Harrisburg Area Community College, and his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Miami.

He attended Penbrook United Church of Christ for over 60 years, was a huge Gettysburg History buff, spent hours researching his family genealogy as well as enjoying photography, painting, bowling and supporting the Miami Hurricanes. He served as a host in multiple genealogy chat rooms and mentored many in the processes of researching and connecting their family history. He loved a good story, a good John Wayne flick, a good book on history, and a good joke.

He is survived by his beloved pet ‘Storm Dog” and a beloved “niece” Lilly Lockie of Lebanon. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his beloved Aunt and “second mother” Helen Limppo of Hialeah, Florida. He will be missed by his many cousins, his Farnsworth House family, and the many friends he made and touched through his work and outreach to others.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 1:30 PM at the Kreamer Funeral Home and Crematory, 618 E. Main Street, Annville, PA 17003. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Gettysburg. No viewing. Contributions may be made to the Delaware Valley Golden Retriever Rescue, 60 Vera Cruz Road, Reinholds, PA 17569 in his memory.
