Hester A. Davis was Arkansas' first State Archaeologist. She was instrumental in creating national public policy and conservancy standards for cultural preservation as well as developing professional and ethical standards for archaeologists. She wrote her masters thesis on "Social Interaction and Kinship in Big Cove Community, Cherokee, N.C." In the summer and fall of 1956 she did fieldwork as part of the UNC-CH Cherokee Project of the Cross-Cultural Laboratory.
