With the Rev. Clayton D. Russell of Independent church officiating, final rites for William Nickerson, Sr., 86-year old father of William Nickerson Jr., President of Golden State Mutual Life Insurance Co., were held Wednesday afternoon. Following a brief illness, Mr. Nickerson died Easter Sunday at a rest home. The aged man had suffered a paralytic stroke.
Born in Mansfield, Louisiana, Mr. Nickerson came to Los Angeles for his health in 1921. Father of four children of which the insurance executive was the only son, Mr. Nickerson was married in 1877 to Miss Emma Poole, who died 35 years ago.
OWNED OWN FARM
A farmer in San Jacinto County, Texas at the time of his marriage, by dint of hard work and sacrifice-marketing venison hunted at night and farm products gained by his day labor, he bought his own farm. The family lived in San Jacinto County until William Jr. had completed his education at Bishop College. Then the family moved to Rentiesville, Oklahoma, where Mr. Nickerson bought another farm.
After coming to Los Angeles and regaining his health, Mr. Nickerson engaged in gardening. He was a familiar and active figure in the community until the recent fatal stroke.
Survivors, in addition to his son include: Mmes. Juanita Murchison and Viola Johnson, daughters of Kansas City, Mo; 8 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Mr. Nickerson was a Baptist, and a member of Independent Church.
