She attended Radcliffe Collegw, Barnard College and Oxford University. She was a member of the Friends Meeting in Cambridge, Mass.
She authored many novels,including a series of "Kendal" memories of Quaker life in Rhode Island. She also wrote a history of American Quakers,"A Procession of Friends"

She was predesceased by her parents, her first husband Richard Newman, and her second husband George Selleck She is survived by a son, daughter and three grandchildren
