Steven was the son of Avis Hayes and dear brother of Earl J.Binkley Jr. of Louisville Kentucky, the son of Earl Binkley who predeceased him. Steven enlisted in the US Marine Corps on August 8, 1967 in Louisville and arrived in Vietnam for duty on July 7 1968 where he was assigned to and served with Company H, 2d Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

Upon completion of Operation SUSSEX BAY, the Battalion based at the An Hoa Combat Base resumed participation in Operation MAMELUKE THURST and on September 23, Company H was placed under the operational control of the 1st Battalion, 5th Marines to participate in Operation HENDERSON HILL.

On September 29, Company H engaged the enemy in the vicinity of the hamlet of Cu Ban (3) some 3 kilometers east of Liberty Bridge and the Phu Loc Combat Base. Four Marines were killed in the action and several were wounded. Cpl Steven Brinkley was one of the casualties, he was killed by hostile rifle fire.
