BIRTH-1898 March Quarter birth "registration"-

Name: ALBERY, Albert Arthur

On a voyage from Botwood, Newfoundland to Halifax, Nova Scotia and then on to Methil, Scotland: on 21 Sep 1940 the British Steam merchant ship, the 'Blairangus', with a cargo of timber was sailing in a convoy when it was torpedoed and sunk by a German submarine (u-boat) about 320 miles west-southwest of Rockall.

Six crew members were lost; the ship's master and 27 crew members were picked up by the British merchant ship 'Pikepool' and landed at St. John's, where one of the survivors died of his wounds.

The seven seamen who perished as a result of this incident were-

Fireman Albert Arthur ALBERY,

Able Seaman John Frederick CLARKSON,

Cabin Boy Lawrence IRVING,

Cabin Boy Peter McCARTHY,

Seaman Douglas McLEAN,

Able Seaman Paul VELLA and

Fireman Charles McGAULAY.


Fireman Albery was one of the casualties of this attack and sinking.
