Moncie Lee “Punk” Daniels III, 82, of Manteo, passed away peacefully at his home Saturday, September 12, 2015. Born in Manteo, he was the son of the late Moncie L. Daniels, Jr. and Helen Duvall Ward. He graduated from Manteo High School and proceeded to North Carolina State University where he graduated from the Air Force ROTC Program. He served his country honorably, was a Vietnam Veteran and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel.

His Air Force career was followed by another twenty years of teaching and coaching in the Manteo school system. He was respected, admired and loved by his students and players. He was selected to the NC Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame. He started the Fellowship of Christian Athletes at MHS and led that program for many years. He was very proud to have been an essential part of bringing youth football to Dare County.

When he served as County Commissioner, he had a deep sense of devotion to the citizens he served. He received the Dare County Citizen of the Year Award and he was awarded the prestigious NC Order of the Long Leaf Pine.

An active member of Mount Olivet United Methodist Church, he was an extraordinary Sunday School Teacher. He served as lay leader, served on many committees and was a leader in the Emmaus Community.
