Virgil D. Anderson, the oldest active business man in Aledo, Il, died Sunday afternoon, September 25, 1988 in Mercer County Hospital in Aledo. Funeral services were 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, September 28, 1988 at the Messiah Lutheran Church, Aledo, Pastor William A. Petrilllo, pastor, officiated with burial in Aledo Cemetery.

He was born Feb. 28, 1907 in Aledo, a son of Oscar and Alma Johnson Anderson. He graduated from Aledo High School in 1925 and Augustana College, Rock Island, IL, in 1929 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce. He married Genevieve Powers on June 23, 1930 in the Aledo Methodist Church Parsonage, the couple resided in Aledo their entire married life.

Mr. Anderson began his business career in petroleum marketing in June of 1930, when he started his own gas station with the Johnson Oil Co. He was affiliated with Texaco Oil for more than 46 years and later was associated with Conoco Oil Co. In 1935 he started Anderson Motor Co. dealership for Studebaker and in 1948 he added the Buick Co. to his line. Later he added the Pontiac, Cadillac, AMC, and GMC lines to his dealership.

He was a member of the board of directors of the Illinois Petroleum Marketers Association, receiving its Buckateers Award in 1984 for 54 years of service to the Petroleum Industry. Formerly a director of the National Bank of Aledo and a trustee for the Aledo Fire Protection District, serving as its secretary for many years. Virgil was a member of the Messiah Lutheran Church and served on its church council. He was a trustee of the former Roosevelt Military Academy and a charter member of the Oak View Country Club. He was also a member of the Aledo Kiwanis Club, the Aledo Masonic Lodge 252, AF&AM, the West Central Shrine Club, Mohammed Temple, the Moline Consistory, the Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter 126 and the American Association of Retired Persons.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Gary L. (Karon) Anderson, of Aledo; a daughter, Barbara (Andy) Andrews of Denver, CO; three grandchildren; and four step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, and a grandson.
