This memorial would not have been created if not for the generous assistance of Rick Valentine, who has photographed countless headstones for Find A Grave. I mentioned that a relative of mine was buried at this cemetery but I could not find his wife, whom I believed was also buried there. Within 12 hrs. he had gone to Greenwood Memorial Terrace and located not only this woman, but also her father who is also interred here. He even took really great photos of their graves. I wanted to acknowledge him and THANK him very much for his kind gesture. Lillie married a nephew of my great, great grandparents in the Burkhart branch of my family tree.

Lillian May Valentine was born on October 11th, 1868 in Center City, Chisago County, Minnesota, one of at least five children who were borne to Caroline E. (Chance) Valentine (1841-1930), a native of Ohio, and John Elliott Valentine (1836-2928), also an Ohio native. John was a Union Army Veteran who had married Caroline Feb 17, 1859 in Elkhart County, Indiana. Their first child, Perry H. was b.Nov 20, 1859 in Indiana where the couple was living on the farm of Stephen and Mary Morris in Olive Township of Elkhart County. Stephen and Mary had a farm and two small daughters. John worked on the farm as a farm laborer, a term which meant the person was working on another person's (or a parent's) farm. Following the end of the War Between the States, John, Caroline and young Perry relocated to Minnesota. When the 1870 Census was taken on June 17, 1870, the family was living in Alexandria, Douglas County, Minnesota, where John was a Carpenter. They had property valued at $800 and they stated they had $200 in cash. They also now had three children, young Perry, age 10, who was attending school, Samuel, age 4, who had been born in Minnesota, and little Lillie, who had also been born in Minnesota, and was just one year of age. A Minnesota state census from May, 1875, has the family living in Sauk Centre, Stearns County, Minnesota and totaling five children. It was a population Census and lists: John E. Valentine, 39 yrs.,
Caroline, his wife, 34 yrs.,
Percy, their son, now 15 yrs.,
Samuel, their son, now 9 yrs.,
Lilla M., their daughter, listed as 7 yrs.,
Jessie L., their daughter, age 5 yrs., and
John K., their son, age 1 yr.
I don't know when the family moved to Washington, but they were there before November 27th, 1889, when Lillie May, at the age of 21 years married Horace Walter Gay, a native of Oregon who had been born in Portland, Oregon, in November, 1864, a son of Oregon Pioneers, Charles Franklin Gay and Rebecca Burkhart Gay. There was no census conducted in 1890 and, as if to make amends for this the census of 1900 was more informative than any before it or since. [Information can be found regarding birth month, year and location, place of birth of parents, number of yrs. married, number of children born and number of children still alive, citizenship status, date of immigration and naturalization, education and employment.] As of June 15, 1900, Lillian and Horace were the parents of two sons, Horace Clare, b.Oct 11, 1896, and Carol Walter, b.Aug 30, 1899. They were renting their home in the Eureka Precinct of Spokane City in Spokane Co., Washington where her husband was the foreman at a cab company.[His name is misspelled "Horass" on the census form]. By the time that the 1910 Census was taken on Apr 23, 1910, they had relocated to Almota, Whitman Co., Washington where Horace farmed the land. Lilly stated that she had borne six children but only five were alive. I've not been able to determine who that poor child is, I'm sorry to say. In addition to sons Horace Clare, now 13, and Carol Walter, now 10, there were son Elliott Franklin, b.Sep 20, 1904, and daughter Kathleen, b.@1908, as she was 2 yrs. of age when the census was taken. 1920 shows the family back in Spokane, Washington, with Horace working as a Teamster, Carol was a machinist at Western Pine and Allen was a clerk for S & R railway. Elliott was now 15, Kathleen was 12, and there was one last child, a daughter they named Valentine, b.1911. They had purchased their house, although they had moved to Twisp, Okanagon County, Washington, living there in 1935 [as Lilly's mother, Caroline (Chance) Valentine, had died there on Sep 29th, 1930], then returned again to Spokane, which is where her son, Horace Clare Gay, died at the age of 37, leaving Grace a widow with two children, Orville, b.1921, and Harold, b.1922. Then her husband of nearly 50 years, Horace Walter Gay, died on July 21st, 1937 at the age of 74. Both Lilly's mother and now her husband were buried at Greenwood Memorial Terrace in Spokane, Washington. Her youngest daughter, Valentine Gay, continued to live with her mother at the family's home at 1507 Riverton Road, Spokane, Washington, which was valued at $1000 in 1940. Valentine was a retail clerk in a grocery store. Next door, her brother, John K. Valentine, his wife, Dora A., and older brother, Samuel, all lived together, paying $5.00 rent per month; John and Sam both worked as millmen at the "Gold Mine" (a saw mill?). Lilly's other daughter, Kathleen, now 32, had married Roy G. Bray of Missouri. Her husband was a cabinet builder at a woodworking shop, supporting their children, sons Roy G., age 11 and James W., age 7. They owned the house that was valued at $500 in 1940. Lilly lived with her aging children around her until her death on July 24th, 1952. She was buried at Greenwood Memorial Terrace as well. May they all Rest in Peace forever.
