Betty (Florence E.) Bowles, age 89, of St. Augustine, passed away on Sept. 11, 2015, at Moultrie Creek Nursing Home in St. Augustine, Florida.

Betty was born on Feb. 26, 1926, in Middletown, New York, the only surviving child of Jessie and Louis Grossholz. She graduated from Middletown High School.

She was united in marriage to Edwin Martin Bowles in September of, 1945.
She was a member of the Catholic Church. Betty attended Florida Hospital School of Practical Nursing and graduated in 1976, later she attended Seminole Community College and received an Associate Degree in Nursing. She worked as a nurse in Central Florida before becoming a "Traveling Nurse," traveling throughout the US and eventually worked at Flagler Hospital in St. Augustine. Betty retired from nursing in 1998, and subsequently worked as a docent at St. Augustine's Spanish Military Hospital in St. Augustine, and at St. Augustine's Oldest House until 2006. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Genealogy Society and worked as a volunteer St. John's County Library, Southeast Branch until 2014.

Betty lived in St. Augustine Beach and on Hope Street before eventually settling at the Moultrie Oaks Retirement Community in St. Augustine, where she had many friends, and enjoyed participating in a prayer group, playing cards, bingo and attending the Alhambra Theatre.
Betty was an avid traveler who traveled throughout Europe, Asia North and South America.

Survivors include four children, Edwin, Christopher, Hannah and Patrick; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband Ed, and their grandson, Edwin Martin Bowles.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2015, at Craig Funeral Home.
A family service and burial will take place at a later time in Tarrytown, New York.
