John William (Jack) Brandis was the son of William Brandes and Mary Henrietta Elizabeth Smith (Schmidt) from Wisner, Cuming, Nebraska. After his father's death abt 1899 his mother married John Wallis Davis. Jack was married to his 1st wife Anna Johnson under the stepfather's name of Davis. Jack Davis and Anna Johnson had 4 children: Hans William Davis (Shorty); Milo Harris; and twins Marvin Earl Davis and Melvin E. Davis. After Anna's mental breakdown and subsequent death Hans (Shorty) was raised by his Aunt Etta (Brandes) Waddell in Keya Paha County, Nebraska; Milo was adopted by William and Blanche Harris and was raised in Salt Lake City, Utah; Marvin Earl Davis was raised by his grandmother Mary (Smith) Bogue in Norfolk, Nebraska and later moved to Shasta County, California; twin brother Melvin E. died when he was 6 months old. Jack Davis then took back his birth name and married Martha Ryan as Jack Brandis. Jack Brandis and Martha Ryan had 4 children: Donald William Brandis of White Pine, Nevada; Milred Irene (Brandis) Dvoracek of Lake Andes, South Dakota; Melvin Merle Brandis Sr. of Winner, South Dakota; and Cecil Leroy Brandis of South Dakota.
