Son of Matthew Bell and Margaret (McCurdy) Bell of Lubec. He grew up in Lubec and was an apprentice barber in his father's shop.

ARMY AIR BASE, WORLD WAR II.

Killed in service, when B-17G Flying Fortress
#42-97875 crashed into a residential
neighborhood in Sioux City, Iowa after
departing the air base there.

Nine members of the Army aircrew were
killed:

2nd Lt. Frank M Barns, pilot
Flt. Off. Donald W Andresen
Flt. Off. James M. Bell
2nd Lt. David M Brimm
Cpl. John W Lancaster, Jr
Cpl. Elton C Modin
Cpl. Jack R Reed
PFC Allan W Chadbourne
PFC Robert E Klassen
