Rebecca Jane Hay Barnett, 87, of Germantown, TN, passed away peacefully on September 14, 2015, surrounded by her adoring family.

Rebecca, affectionately known as Becky, was born in October of 1927, to Walter and Sallie Hay in Crockett County, TN, as the youngest of eleven children.

Becky Barnett is preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Marvin Wesley Barnett, her parents, 9 of her siblings, and her stepdaughter, Gloria Barnett Goss.

After graduating from Hamlett Robertson High School in Crockett Mills, TN, Becky Barnett followed her passion for medical and nursing services enrolling in and then graduating from Baptist Memorial Hospital School of Nursing and the University of Tennessee, Memphis/City of Memphis Hospital School of Nurse Anesthesia.

Her nursing career spanned 49 illustrious years, and as a Registered Nurse and a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist, Becky Barnett held several esteemed nursing and teaching positions. At Obion County General Hospital in Union City, TN, she was the Operating Room Supervisor. Following that professional pursuit, she joined the nursing staff at City of Memphis Hospital in Memphis, TN, occupying the ranks of Operating Room Surgical Nurse, Staff Nurse Anesthetist, and Chief Nurse Anesthetist. As Chief Nurse Anesthetist at University of Tennessee/William F. Bowld Hospital in Memphis, TN, she was a respected member of the anesthesia team for organ transplant services. In this capacity, she worked closely with many medical residents in the clinical setting and aided many local, regional, and national patients, even attending to the youngest liver transplant recipient in Memphis, TN. Her widespread knowledge and expertise in her chosen field led her to an educational appointment as Clinical Instructor for UT School of Nurse Anesthesia, where she taught and guided many of Memphis’s nurse anesthetists and anesthesiologists; she was also proud of the work and research done in her field and presented a paper on neuromuscular blockade.

As a revered member of the local medical community, Becky Barnett was actively involved in the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists and the Tennessee Association of Nurse Anesthetists. Her passion for her profession and her love of extending knowledge led her to hold many esteemed leadership roles in these associations, such as Program Chairman, Chair of Educational District I, Vice President, President-elect, President, Board of Directors, and Parliamentarian. She also served as a member of the Malpractice Review Board.

Becky Barnett’s medical service extended past her Nurse Anesthetist posts and into the community. She combined her professional intelligence with her spiritual enlightenment. She was a decades-long member of Colonial Park United Methodist Church. Bringing her love of medicine, her love of God, and her love of service together with her status as a breast cancer survivor for 27 years, she was actively involved in supporting women of this community going through similar surgeries and treatments. Her medical knowledge along with her bedside manner and gentle demeanor proved calming and soothing to the women whose lives she touched.

Her selfless acts of generosity to many members of the Memphis community paled in comparison to the selflessness she showed to her first love, her adoring family.
Becky Barnett gave herself whole-heartedly to her children Ed Barnett (Nancy), Memphis, TN; Jane Gardner (Vance), Collierville, TN; her stepson Wesley Barnett (Jessie), Crockett Mills, TN; her grandchildren Nicole Nannie (David), Germantown, TN; Wes Barnett (Lauren), Memphis, TN; Walter Barnett, Memphis, TN; David Gardner (Stefanie), Collierville, TN; Rebecca Henderson (Barry), Racine, WI; Chad Barnett (Tracie), Tuscaloosa, AL; Julie Allen, Tuscumbia, AL; Tanya Adams (Kevin), Athens, GA; Todd Hancock (Summer), Brentwood, TN.

Rebecca Jane Hay Barnett is survived by her sister, Rachel Madden (Tommy) of Jefferson, IN, her aforementioned children and grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren. The family of Mrs. Barnett will memorialize her and celebrate the full and blessed life she lived with a visitation at Memorial Park Funeral Home on Thursday, September 17, from 4:00-6:00 p.m. Family and friends will gather at the funeral home at 10:30 a.m. before proceeding to a graveside service at Memorial Park Cemetery on Friday, September 18, at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Methodist Residence Hospice, 6416 Quince Road, Memphis, TN 38119.
