Dacus attended school in the Lake Valley and Cloud Chief communities through the eighth grade, finishing his high school education by correspondence at the age of 36. He went to work at age 14 at Jiggs Produce and Creamery. In 1949, he moved to California, and worked in the San Joaquin Valley on a grape ranch. In 1950, Dacus married Peggy June Ellis at Sentinel, Oklahoma, and they lived the first three years of their married life in California. In 1951, a son, Lavern, was born and a daughter, Wanelda in 1953. They moved back to Oklahoma in 1954, and he resumed work for Jiggs Botchlett at the turkey ranch where he worked for the next 23 years. Dacus went to work for the Farmers’ Cooperative Association in Cordell, in 1967, and remained in the grain elevator business until his retirement in 1996. Dacus was always very committed to his work and in 1993 he was recognized as Oklahoma Cooperative Manager of the Year. He was also very dedicated to his church, serving for many years as Deacon and Sunday School Superintendent at the First Assembly of God in Cordell. After retirement, he farmed and ranched in the Cordell area until his health began to fail in 2012, at which time he became a resident of the Cordell Christian home, until his death.
