Samuel was the son of John Craig and Mary Euphemia "Eva" Schreiber. He married Emily Bryan in 1848. He went missing, and probably died, during the Civil War.

His wife Emily was the daughter of Nathaniel Bryan and Nancy Beall. After Samuel died, Emily sold her property in Allegany County, Maryland in 1863. She married Asa Gideon Bealls on June 23, 1864 and they moved first to Tippecanoe County, Indiana, then to Montana with her son John and her daughter Jeanette.
