George Robert Baker died at the VA Medical Center in Marion Saturday morning, June 6, 1953 after a prolonged illness. He was born in Golconda November 12, 1890 to John and Mary Butler Baker. He attended school at Metropolis and was married to Juanita Roberts at Chattanooga, TN July 21, 1914. Survivors include the widow and five children, Mrs. Mary Dungey, Camp Polk, LA; Mrs. Lora Weir, Phoenix, AZ; Mrs. Doris Casper, Highland Park, MI; Mrs. Oscar Williams and Mrs. Helen Murphy, both of Marion, and brother Ed Baker of Metropolis. He was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters. He is also survived by six grandchildren.
He had worked as a miner for many years and had been employed as night watchman for the VFW Home in Marion before becoming ill. He was a veteran of World War I, begin discharged as a first sergeant. Frick Funeral home is in charge of arrangements and burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Enlisted Aug. 9, '17, Jefferson Barracks. Overseas Jan 12, '18. Attached to M.G. Co. 26 Inf. Engaged in active service at Cantigny and Soissons. Discharged April 12, '19, at Camp Grant, Ill."
