Alice supported her family by working outside of the home. She began her career as a teacher which is what took her to Arizona originally. She also taught in North Dakota and Wyoming. She later became the superintendent of schools and all reports are that she was re-elected time and again for her excellent service to Iowa county Iowa. All three of her children grew up to be teachers. It seems she faced tough circumstances and succeeded through determination and tenacity.
