The ancestry of William D. Baldwin is not known. He was born between 1800 and 1810, location and parents unknown. He is believed to have served in the Black Hawk War in 1832 in Fulton County, Illinois. He is next seen immigrating to the Republic of Texas with his family in Jan 1838. By 1844 he is in Grimes County and then dies at some point in 1849 (based on the existence of his probate in that county). The location of his grave in Grimes County is not known.

William is believed to have been the husband of a Jane Baldwin who first appears in the 1850 census in Walker County, Texas. The document "The Mystery of Jane Baldwin" linked to at the website "The Thompson Family Genealogy" provides a detailed argument for the link between William and Jane and her children.
