Joan Patterson passed away September 19, 2015 at the age of 92 at Riverview Manor in Oxford, Kansas. She was born March 1, 1923 to Joseph R. and Leah (Sutton) Knoble in Woodward, Oklahoma. She attended school in Fargo, Oklahoma. In 1938 she married Elmer Morgan in Woodward. To this union two children were born, a daughter, Viva and a son, Gary.

Joan moved to Coldwater, Kansas in 1943. She received her High School GED by correspondence and was a self taught bookkeeper. She held several secretarial and bookkeeping positions while living in Coldwater. In 1962 Joan moved to Wichita, Kansas and worked as a bookkeeper for Crony’s Dress Shop and Baker Engineering. In June of 1967 she began working for Byron Radcliff and Valentine Buildings. She moved to Dexter, Kansas and worked for Radcliff Ranch as well as keeping books for the Dexter Fire Department. Joan retired from Radcliff Ranch in September of 2009 at the age of 86. She was very proud of the fact that she was 86 and still working. She loved working, in fact she put up quite a fuss when she was forced to retire due to her health. When she wasn’t working she enjoyed camping, fishing and dancing. She loved to dance and when she was younger she would be the first one on the dance floor.

In 1981 Joan was united in marriage to Gary Patterson. The couple had a camper and they spent time at the Winfield Lake in the summers. She wasn’t a housekeeper but she was a good cook, and boy could she make good candy and jelly. She cooked a big turkey dinner on Thanksgiving and Christmas until she just couldn’t do that anymore, and you never knew who was going to be there. Everyone was welcome at her house. She made friends easily and had many good friends. She loved her children and her grandchildren were the apple of her eye.

Joan received Jesus as her Lord, later in life and went to church at the Dexter Christian Church as long as her health permitted. In June of 2012 as her health deteriorated she moved to Riverview Manor in Oxford, Kansas. She accepted that move gracefully and made the best of the situation. Even then she has a sweet smile and was loved by both the staff and other residents, they called her Grandma. She was always happy for the visits she received and never complained.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents, a baby sister, Viva, a sister, Barbara, a half sister, June, and her husband, Gary Patterson.

She is survived by her daughter, Viva McGee and husband, Gary of Wichita, son, Gary Morgan and wife, Glenda of Wichita, granddaughter, Lisa McGee of Wichita, grandson Scott Morgan of Dallas, TX, and great grandson, Tyler Morgan of Florida.

Graveside memorial services and inurnment will be held at 10:30 A.M., at Dexter Cemetery in Dexter, Kansas. Miles Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established in Joan’s name for the Dexter Christian Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
