Mission: 

John departed on an anti-shipping mission to attack the flotilla escorting the German battleships Scharnhorst and Gneisenau (Operation 'Fuller' – "The Channel Dash"). While engaging the flotilla, his aircraft was shot down by naval AAA fire and crashed into the sea. All five crew members were killed.
