Dr. W. W. Bryant, the oldest medical practitioner in Sycamore, died at his home in this city late Monday night, December 18.
For several weeks he had been seriously ill and it was felt for nearly a fortnight that the end was but a few days away.
His wife and children, Charles and Nellie, were with him at the end.
William Wallace Bryant was born October 31, 1832, at Chesterfield, Hampshire county, Mass. His father, Martin M. Bryant was born in the same place and in 1838 settled at North Adams, where he pursued the medical profession until his death in 1844.
Dr. Bryant was a child of six years when his parents went to the town of Adams, and was 12 years old when his father died. He remained with his mother and attended Dury academy in Adams, and subsequently became a student at Marlow, N. H. He began to read medicine under the instructions of Dr. W. W. Gardner, at Pittsfield, Mass., and attended lectures at the Medical College at Worcester in his native state, where he graduated in June 1856.
In October of the same year Dr. Bryant came to Sycamore, then in the days of its incipiency, and had since been engaged as a practitioner here. He built a substantial business, and discharged the duties of his profession with little intermission.
Dr. Bryant was married in September 1856, to Cordelia Sheldon. She was born in Monroe, Mass., and is the daughter of Hiram G. and Lydia (Ballou) Sheldon.
To them were born four children: Charles H., a practicing physician at Corning, la,; Austin B., now deceased; William M., now deceased, and Nellie, wife of E. N. Miner, also of Corning, Iowa.
The funeral services will be held at the residence on Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock, and will be conducted by Rev. George A. Sahlin, of the Universalist church. The remains will be interred in the family lot in Elmwood.
