Abraham Bernstein was one of the pioneer settlers in Schoharie County. He came from Germany via Philadelphia and after marrying Eva Ann Young, of Carlisle, NY, conducted a village store in Carlisle for many years. Abraham and Eve Ann had 4 children, Edward, Flora, Charles and Benjamin, and died when their son, Charles Bernstein was a very young child, but the father left a small sum to be used for education of the son. For a short time after the death of the parents, the family was kept together by the older son (Edward) and daughter (Flora) with the aid of a housekeeper and their maternal uncle, Madison Young, who was the village school teacher and a severe disciplinarian. . There was also another son, Benjamin, who migrated west when he was young and was never reunited with his birth family.
