Mary's parents left Ireland in 1847 or 1848, probably due to the Famine, likely arrived in New York and traveled on the Erie Canal to Western New York. By 1850 they had settled in Clarkson, NY, where Delia, Mary's older sister was born in 1850. The family appears in the Census, "Terren" (Terence) and Ann with Delia. Terren is a laborer, Ann has no occupation listed, both born in Ireland and aged 34. By 1855 the family is still in Clarkson and Mary is 2, dad Terence is listed as "Ganis" or "Tanis", his accent may have been difficult for the census taker to understand and Terence an unfamiliar name. By 1860 the family has moved to nearby Greece, NY. Terence is recorded as "Tony", but the rest of the family is the same, Delia is 10 and Mary 7, attending school. Terence died in Greece in 1863, followed 2 years later by Ann, both buried in Greece NY, leaving Mary and Delia orphaned. Delia appears in the 1865 Census in Greece living with William and Amanda Fall as a servant, William is a Hotel Keeper, Mary disappears from the record and has likely been taken in by another family, enumerated under their name. She re-appears 3 years later as "Miss Mary Smith" who married the older John Bailey, a German immigrant farmer who lived in nearby Parma NY on Bailey Rd. Mary and John had at least 9 children together.
