Daughter of Mary Ann Cox Sprague 1853-1934 and Amos Daniel Sprague 1850-1942
She began work as a school teacher and church choir leader in Lancaster, Wisconsin and later became a stenographer in Portage, where she remained close to her mother Mary. In 1911, Ferne went to work as the personal secretary for the esteemed Dr. A Sherman in Oshkosh, superintendent of the Northern Hospital for the Insane. It was in Oshkosh where she met her future husband George Bartholomew Whare, who was a promising young doctor. They married on March 12, 1913 in a quiet little Baptist ceremony in Oshkosh. In 1915, the two moved to Minnesota where George started his own medical practice.
Ferne and Dr. Whare had two sons, Warren Hunter Whare 1916-1917 (who sadly died of pneumonia, at age 6 mos.) and Beverly George "Doc" Whare 1918-1969.
Ironically, the good doctor lost his life a decade after losing his first child to pneumonia, and he by the same sickness. Ferne and Beverly took in Ferne's elderly mother until her death in 1934, and then the two carried on together until Ferne succumbed to bronchopneumonia herself, with her brother Frank called to her side.
