In the early 1930's, Mary Veronica Altwies ran a candy store within walking distance of the grade school where her daughter Winifred Marie Kleinman attended school. She sold candy, hot dogs, ice cream, candy apples and school supplies. When Winifred graduated from grade school her mother invited all her classmates to come to the store for a free ice cream cone.

The owners of the building in which the candy store was located saw what a great business Mary Veronica had. So after one summer (the slow season), the owners kicked her out and reopened the store for themselves when the new school year began. But their business was never as good, partly because the school instituted rules about staying on the school grounds at lunch time.

Mary V Altwies opened another candy store nearby but it didn't do as well because of poor location, and so she gave it up.
