Lieutenant William St John Coventry was the son of John Coventry and Emily Mary Coventry (née

Weld), of Burgate Manor, Fordingbridge, Salisbury, Wiltshire. Born in Blendon, Bexleyheath, London.

 

Gentleman Cadet at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. Commissioned into the Bedfordshire Regiment as a 2nd Lieutenant on 4 Sep 1912. Promoted to Lieutenant on 21 Jan 1914. The Battalion was stationed in Mullingar, Ireland when WW1 started. They were deployed to France as part of 15th Infantry Brigade, 5th Division, and they landed at Le Havre on 16 Aug 1914. They fought at the Battle of Mons in Aug 1914, and at Le Cateau, in the First Battle of the Aisne (13-28 Sep 1914), were deployed to Flanders and fought around Neuve Chapelle and at La Bassee in Oct 1914.

 

On 19 Oct 1914 Lieutenant Coventry was in B Company, who were sent to join the Cheshire Regiment on their left near Violaines. At dawn on 22 Oct 1914 the Germans launched an attack through B Company.

 

Lieutenants Coventry and Litchfield were reported missing and 40 soldiers were either killed, wounded or missing. Lieutenant Coventry was mentioned in despatches.

 

He is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial, Richebourg-l'Avoue, Departement du Pas-de-Calais, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France.
