Bertha E. "Bert" Altmaier, 90, originally of Delta, Ohio, died Friday, August 4, 2006, at her home on 373 S. Seffner Ave. in Marion, Ohio.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Emanuel Lutheran Church in Marion, Ohio, with Pastor Mark Schuring conducting the service. Burial was at the Marion Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to the Quality of Life Hospice Program at Marion General Hospital and to the Radio Fund at the Emanuel Lutheran Church.
Bertha was born April 24, 1916 in Delta, Ohio, the daughter of Samuel W. and Louisa (Britsch) Zimmerman.
She married Dr. Clovis J. Altmaier on June 21, 1941, in Toledo, Ohio. Their union produced one daughter, two sons, five grandchildren and one great grandchild. She was a resident of Marion, Ohio for 65 years.
Bertha was a 1933 graduate of Pettisville High School and 1937 graduate from Lucas Co. School of Nursing. She also attended Toledo University.
Upon graduation, Bertha worked as a registered nurse for Dr. Arthur James in Toledo and later filled in for her husband's staff.
Bertha enjoyed numerous memberships, including: an active member of the Emanuel Lutheran Church as an adult choir singer, Sunday school teacher and laye reader; past president of the Auxillary Marion Academy of Medicine; a charter member of the Junior Service Guild; a charter member of the Creator's Art Guild; a member of the Green Thumb Garden Club; a board member of the Marion YMCA for five years; served on the City Board of Health for six years; a member of the Literary Arts Club; a hospice volunteer; a visiting nurse in the Reach to Recovery Program of the ; the First Aid instructor for the American Red Cross; a volunteer for the Eye to Eye Clinic; a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow; and she was sought as a student speaker for youth groups, service clubs and church organizations. She also was well-known for her presentation of "The Innkeeper."
Bertha is survived by her daughter, Marilyn Reichenberg of Boulder, Colorado; two sons, Martin (Deadra) Altmaier of Newark, Ohio and Michael (Elizabeth "Betsy") Altmaier of Iowa City, Iowa; one sister, Pauline Knapp of Salinas, Calif.; five grandchildren, William Scott Reichenberg, Ann Altmaier, Karen Lane, Kathryn and Gregory Altmaier; and one great grandson, William Tyler Reichenberg.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; one granddaughter, Allison Reichenberg; one brother, Vincent Zimmerman; and two sisters, Mildred Zimmerman and Ortensa "Kay" Pennington.
